The client that called us to help her with her entry actually grew up in this beautiful home. Regardless of size, homes of this time period generally feel small. The rooms are choppier and there are walls blocking the view everywhere. We weren’t interested in changing the wall structure, but we needed to lighten the space to give it a softer and more open feel.
The new palate is pale and highly textural. The grasscloth is woven with pale gray tones and a hint of camel. The camel not only keeps this room from being too cool, it is beautiful with the oak floors that are original to the home. The old paper is striped and small in scale. Being careful with pattern in small spaces is important. We are never opposed to pattern, but the size of pattern is super important. Something this small and busy makes this space too closed in.
Choosing to cover the old wallpaper with this new beautiful grasscloth wallpaper was so right on. The high texture not only adds so much warmth to the space, but it covers any imperfections that exist an many older homes with plaster walls. We always suggest having a professional do your wallpaper job, and show him/her the paper first to make sure its a good quality paper.
The dark paint that we carried to the crown and banister is a fantastic charcoal color that was used elsewhere in the house. By just using it at the crown and the banister railing we are keeping the colors consistent with the rest of the house and adding a bit of drama.
We kept the colors monochromatic. The color scheme is soft and pale. The important part to this is adding the texture in the wallpaper, the texture in the beautiful new wool carpet running up the stairs and the charcoal accents on the crown and banister. The space feels light and open. Even in a space with a lot of walls, by continuing a color scheme throughout will help to make a space feel more open and will allow a flow.
Pale paint colors are not always easy to choose. We always recommend buying a quart, painting it on a piece of foam core board and moving it throughout your space at all times of the day.
This home remodel was so fun to be part of. The contractor was Darin Olson. Everything on the outside was replaced including the roof, siding, windows and the doors. We actually took a window out on the north side of the house to allow an interior wall for the television. But we made the windows on the front of the house and the back bigger to keep the house naturally lit and open. We took the screen door off and added a beautiful 2 panel door. The colors on this house are amazing and really unique. Don’t be afraid to go dark on the roof, it can be a really dramatic feature.
