The client that called us to help her with her entry actually grew up in this beautiful home. Regardless of size, homes of this time period generally feel small. The rooms are choppier and there are walls blocking the view everywhere. We weren’t interested in changing the wall structure, but we needed to lighten the space to give it a softer and more open feel.
The new palate is pale and highly textural. The grasscloth is woven with pale gray tones and a hint of camel. The camel not only keeps this room from being too cool, it is beautiful with the oak floors that are original to the home. The old paper is striped and small in scale. Being careful with pattern in small spaces is important. We are never opposed to pattern, but the size of pattern is super important. Something this small and busy makes this space too closed in.
Choosing to cover the old wallpaper with this new beautiful grasscloth wallpaper was so right on. The high texture not only adds so much warmth to the space, but it covers any imperfections that exist an many older homes with plaster walls. We always suggest having a professional do your wallpaper job, and show him/her the paper first to make sure its a good quality paper.
The dark paint that we carried to the crown and banister is a fantastic charcoal color that was used elsewhere in the house. By just using it at the crown and the banister railing we are keeping the colors consistent with the rest of the house and adding a bit of drama.
We kept the colors monochromatic. The color scheme is soft and pale. The important part to this is adding the texture in the wallpaper, the texture in the beautiful new wool carpet running up the stairs and the charcoal accents on the crown and banister. The space feels light and open. Even in a space with a lot of walls, by continuing a color scheme throughout will help to make a space feel more open and will allow a flow.
Pale paint colors are not always easy to choose. We always recommend buying a quart, painting it on a piece of foam core board and moving it throughout your space at all times of the day.
We love this house! It’s a beautiful older home with great bones, character and charm. So when this client contacted us to update the bathroom you can imagine how excited we were to be part of this project.
There are a few things to keep in mind when your considering updating anything on the exterior of your home. Unfortunately one thing always leads to another. If you get a new roof and leave the paint, the paint will look old and dingy. Chances are if you are changing the color of siding you will want to consider your gutters. Don’t forget the lighting, the front door, the list continues………
Yes! The answer is always yes! Today, wallpaper is becoming more popular because new materials, as well as advancements in digital, photo and printing technologies, have brought a new generation of artists and designers to the medium. Think of wallpaper as a large piece of art and add it to just one wall in your space as an accent. Use bold pattern or colors, and let it be the focus of the room. If you have a room with molding on the walls that creates a paneled effect, just add the wallpaper inside of the panels. Wallpaper can be art, so go ahead and mount a piece on plywood backing, frame it and hang it on the wall. Wallpaper doesn’t have to be just for walls. Consider applying it to the ceiling to give your room an unexpected twist. The options are endless when you find the right wall paper for your home. Looking for home wallpaper inspiration? Let us help you find it!
We love wallpaper and can find a room, or a wall, or a ceiling in your home that should have wallpaper. All you need is the right people to hang it, and the right pattern (or texture) for your space.
